Performing
Arts (music, dance and drama) are an integral feature of every
culture. By neglecting them, as we have done for so many years,
we have compelled a vast number of people to fritter away their
artistic leanings into mundane pursuits.
Our curriculum is designed to provide every student with a strong
and broad foundation in the Performing Arts. Both Music &
Theatre Arts Departments will consist of teacher-performers
as well as academic instructors. Our object is to enrich permanently
the lives of the students by helping to cultivate and foster
in them a love for the beautiful and ennobling arts of music,
dance and drama.
We feel privileged to be housed in the old Hindu Gymkhana, one
of the landmark buildings of Pakistan. It was designed by that
remarkable architect, Ahmed Husain Agha, who also designed the
Mohatta Palace in Karachi. Agha drew his inspiration from the
17th century Mughal tomb of Itmad-ud-Daullah, (the father of
Empress Noor Jahan) at Agra. The treatment of its four octagonal
corner towers, the disposition of its arched openings etc.,
are all reminiscent of the symmetry and spaciousness of Mughal
design.
It is my hope that the newly founded National Academy of Performing
Arts will bear testimony to the richness of many traditions
and becomes a testimony to the dreams and aspirations of those
creative luminaries who are no longer with us.
I welcome you to NAPA.
