Theatre Arts Courses

The Theatre Arts department will offer students academic courses in all aspects of the theatre as well as practical exploration and the opportunity to present their work before an audience.

The disciplines offered are:

- Voice and Speech
- Movement
- Improvisation and Scene work
- Diction
- Mime
- Stage Management
- Design and Decor
- Directing
- Playwriting
- Film/TV techniques
- Make Up

Speech exercise will be an actor's introduction to phonetics and ear training. Students work to identify and eliminate individual conditioning and speech habits that inhibit clear and effective verbal communication. The course will work towards developing a sense of rhythm, pronunciation and non regionalized speech, as well as projection, range, clarity, strength and flexibility without losing their individual characteristics of speech.

Scene work prepares the acting student towards developing an individual approach to dramatic text analysis, rehearsal techniques, and work habits through regular scene presentation and criticism. Scenes for practice will be selected from world dramatic literature as well as Urdu texts focusing on the exploration of heightened language, characterization and style.

Voice and Speech: This helps the actor to speak with more power, ease, conviction and vocal range. Students explore various techniques to develop a richer stronger and more versatile speaking voice. Breathing exercises ensure the production of more sound with less effort and are the key to reducing vocal strain, improving tonal quality, and maintaining resonance.

Introduction to Acting for Television and Cinema: While the basic principles and the inner dynamics of acting remain the same for stage and the screen, there are some differences in emphasis largely dictated by the differences in space and time in each medium. This course would aim towards imparting an understanding of the varying requirements of the two and developing a flexibility of a style that would help towards a successful performance in either medium.
