Odissi
Odissi is the most ancient of the classical dance traditions
of the sub-continent, tracing its origins to the Indus Valley
civilization. The famous statuette of the dancing girl of
Mohenjodaro, as well as a number of the seals from both Harappa
and Mohenjodaro, depict postures and poses that remain a part
of the present form of Odissi dance we know today.
This
two-year course seeks to introduce students to the fundamentals
of the Odissi dance technique focusing on the basic postures,
steps, footwork and hand gestures. Students will begin to
explore creative expression and choreography with an introduction
to the concepts of musical and rhythmic structure in our tradition.
